Video Creation - ( Capture / Production / Edit / Author )

Adobe has a great selection of video creation software than can be purchased at monthly rates, including discounts for students. Here is an example:

  • After Effects is a great production tool for creating awesome graphic motion to add to your video production, such as Video Intro's or motion Logo effects.

A great source of information on this software can be seen at YouTube's Video Copilot channel. This LEGIT organization will also supply you with some mind

blowing FREE effects such as the plug-in SABER, which can mimic light sabers from Star Wars and much, much more! Check Out the SABER link!

Sony Creative Software is also a reputable company that has been creating some great video tools. Here is an example:

( Note: At the time I am writing this, Sony Creative Software is in the process of being bought out by Magix, another reputable company. )

  • VEGAS PRO is Sony's top end video editing and *authoring software.  ( *depending on which sub type of VEGAS PRO, VEGAS PRO EDIT, or VEGAS PRO SUITE )
  • VEGAS Movie Studio is Sony's lower cost assortment to the Vegas Pro.

Windows Movie Maker is a completely free video editing program (you get what you pay for) that is very good for people just starting to get into editing

What is a video Codec

When uploading to Youtube, their prefered codec is H.264. It's technically an MPEG4 codec with some preferences, but it comes standard in the latest version of quicktime.

Sometimes when working with video files on the internet, you'll run into a program that isn't able to handle the file type of your video. For example, MPEG2, the format that my handheld camera records video in, cannot be used on Windows Movie Maker.

Here is a link to a (completely) free video file format converter, that can convert just about any video file type into any other video file type!
